A bedside table looks simple. But a top that is hard to reach can be annoying every night.
Before choosing a wooden bedside table, check how it will work beside your actual bed. Height is only part of the picture.
Measure beside your mattress
Note the height of the mattress top with the bed set up as usual. Compare it with the finished height shown in the table plan.
Then think about reaching from the bed. There is no single height that feels right for everyone.
List what you keep nearby
A phone, glasses, a book and a glass of water all need space. A lamp may take up much of the top.
Lay the items out before choosing a size. Check that you can pick up one thing without knocking into another.
Leave room beside the bed
Measure the available width and depth. Include the space needed to get in and out of bed.
If the table has a drawer, check where it opens. Nearby walls, bedding or other furniture may get in the way.
Think about charging cables
Check where the outlet is and how the cable will run. A design with cable access may suit your setup, but the opening needs to fit the connector too.
Keep cables clear of the walking area. Do not let a furniture idea decide where electrical equipment can safely go.
Compare the build details
Look for:
- Clear finished dimensions.
- A materials list and required tools.
- Joint and assembly instructions.
- Drawer hardware details, if needed.
- Any stability or anchoring requirements.
A nice picture does not tell you how the table is built. Choose a plan with enough detail to assess the project.
