Ready to try woodworking, but unsure which tools to buy? A long shopping list can make a small project feel like a big commitment.
Choose a project before choosing a full tool set. The tools you need depend on the cuts, joints and materials in its plan.
Start with what you already have
List your tools and check their condition. Include measuring tools, clamps and the equipment you use for cutting or drilling.
Owning a tool is only part of the question. You also need to know how to use it safely for the work involved.
Read the tool list in the plan
Look for the exact tools and accessories required. Check whether the steps call for angled cuts, drilled holes or a type of joint you have not made before.
A plan that only names the finished project may not give you enough information to prepare.
Make three short lists
- Already have: Suitable tools you can use safely.
- Need access to: Tools you would need to buy, borrow or use in a workshop.
- Need to learn: Cuts or techniques you have not practiced.
This makes the real commitment easier to see before you buy materials.
Check the workspace, too
Think about a stable work surface, room to handle the wood and suitable lighting. Check dust control and the protective equipment required by your tools.
Follow the tool makers’ instructions. This article is a planning checklist, not a guide to operating a saw or other tool.
Choose a project that fits your setup
Do not assume a small object needs only basic tools. Its joints and cuts may be more demanding than they look.
It is fine to compare another plan. A different design may suit your current equipment and experience better.

Make a project list before a shopping list
Choose something you will use. Read its plan. Then decide what equipment and practice you need. You do not have to buy everything at once.
