Have a few pieces of wood left from another project? It is tempting to save them for something useful.

Before picking a project, find out what you actually have. A small piece can inspire an idea. It still needs to fit the plan.

Measure the usable wood

Write down each piece’s length, width and thickness. Check whether you know the wood type.

Notice splits, warping, old holes or damaged edges. The usable area may be smaller than the full piece.

Check where it came from

Unknown wood may have old finishes, treatments or hidden metal. Do not assume it is suitable for cutting or for a particular use.

If you cannot identify its condition, get suitable advice before working with it. Follow the safety instructions for your tools.

Explore a few small ideas

  • A small tray: Compare the base and side pieces with what you have.
  • Bookends: Check the design’s support and stability.
  • A pen holder: Look at how the storage space is formed.
  • A small display base: Check the intended object’s size and weight.

These are starting ideas, not a claim that any offcut will work. Each design has its own material needs.

Match the pieces to a plan

Compare your notes with the required parts. Include material lost when cutting and any room needed to trim rough edges.

Do not change important part sizes just to use a scrap. That may affect the joints or how the project works.

Will you need anything else?

A scrap project may still need hardware, glue, a finish or a tool you do not own. Check those needs before deciding.

Choose a manageable project, not just the smallest picture. Small pieces can still involve tricky cuts.
